Girls soccer beats Kankakee Valley in sectional finals

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon as the Lady Bulldogs faced off for a sectional win. Last year, the girls lost in the sectional finals, so this time around the team was determined to win. The Crown Point girls soccer team, led by coach Chris Mikrut, played the Kankakee Valley Kougars, a team who beat them in regular season. The Lady Bulldogs had already won Thursday in their game against Merrillville. The final score of that game was 9-1, but the Bulldogs weren’t done. Junior Annie Brigham, who played in the Merrillville game, was excited about the match up against KV again.
“Moving into the sectional finals the KV game will be very challenging. We lost to them earlier this season so heading into the game, we are ready to beat them,” Brigham said.
The game started slow with many fouls and turnovers given by both teams. The Bulldogs had done a tweak in their formation, which meant a player stayed on KV’s number 10 at all times. That seemed to help the bulldogs because KV did not get a shot on goal until the second half. The Bulldogs were expecting to go into halftime at 0-0, but towards the end of the first half, junior Hannen Abdulla was fouled inside the box and awarded a free kick for CPHS. It was senior Sam Szyndrowski who stepped up to deliver the first goal in the form of a neatly tucked away PK.
In starting the first half at 1-0, the Bulldogs knew another goal was necessary for a sure victory. Working together, Abdulla and senior Delaney Benich sent many shots at the KV goalie. It was in the 68th minute when Abdulla passed the ball to Benich who turned inside her defender to deliver a beautiful ball to the back of the net.
